New Businesses Coming to Somerton

SOMERTON — Four new businesses are expected to open their doors in Somerton in the coming months in what the mayor hopes is a sign of an improving economy in the city.

Two of the businesses are an O’Reilly’s auto parts store and Cynn Motor Sport, a motorcycle and recreational vehicle dealership.

The other two are a construction materials supplier and a restaurant that Mayor Martin Porchas and other city officials declined to name immediately.

Work has begun at the sites of the restaurant on Main Street and the dealership, Porchas said, while the other two businesses are in the design phase. The construction materials supplier plans to locate on County 15th Street near the site of the dealership.

“I think the coming year will be a good one for the city,” Porchas said. “We have some businesses that have confirmed that they are coming.”

That compares to the past 12 months when only one new business came to town, as the Yuma restaurant Taco Salsa opened a branch in Somerton.

“I believe it has had a lot to do with the economy,” Porchas said, referring to slow business growth in latter 2012 and the first half of this year. “Now we are beginning to see better signs.”

New business not only creates jobs, he said, but generates additional sales tax revenue, one of the biggest contributors to the city’s general fund. Porchas said he is confident that the city will end the current fiscal year on June 30 with higher-than-anticipated revenue from the sales tax.

Recent months have seen the city and the Somerton Chamber of Commerce try to boost the economy through a campaign encouraging residents to shop locally. And now the city council is looking at a proposal to give merchants along Main Street a financial incentive to fix up their storefronts as a way to attract more business and help in overall efforts toward redevelopment of the downtown.

While he supports the proposal in theory, Porchas said the council still must figure out where it will get the funds for the incentives and whether they can be included in the budget for the new year that starts July 1.
