AWC Offers a Full Schedule of Career Technical Courses this Fall

Yuma, AZ (July 28, 2010) -- Arizona Western College Division of Career and Technical Education rolls out a full fall schedule of career technical courses as it maintains its tradition of providing career technical education in a variety of skilled trades and technical programs allowing students to learn new skills or return to our community college for new opportunities. Working with local agencies and industry partners AWC continues to work to provide lifelong learning opportunities for a skilled and productive workforce. One of the newest programs of study is the industrial maintenance and electrical instrumentation courses developed in conjunction with the Yuma Manufactures Association to develop a skilled workforce capable of working in the manufacturing sector as a skilled technician. Students begin in the fall semester and continue through a series of courses learning skills identified by local industry as key to working as a maintenance technician in a number of manufacturing environments. Students will have an opportunity to learn through a nationally developed curriculum with local industry experts entry level skills for industrial maintenance. Nationally recognized curriculum and assessments are used throughout many of these programs such as the National Center for Construction Education Research, NATEF, ASE and the American Welding Society S.E.N.S.E. program. Arizona Western College continues to provide career technical education in the fields of Automotive, Air-conditioning, Carpentry, Drafting, Electrical Wiring, Plumbing and Welding Technology leading to a certificate or degree. This year’s fall schedule also includes courses for private pilot license test preparation, OSHA related safety education and Weatherization. Many of these courses are articulated with the local high school district allowing for dual credit so students can get a head start on their college program. Support for the high school to college program is provided through the Tech Prep program directed by Mr. Larry Lebsock. Parents are encouraged to enquire about dual credit and other college opportunities for their high school students by contacting the Tech Prep director. With support from a Department of Labor grant Arizona Western College established an expanded group of training programs for skilled trades and continues to offer courses in Carpentry, Electrical Wiring and Plumbing. In today's economy many people are finding that having a portable skill can offer expanded opportunities for employment. Arizona Western College career technical programs offer a variety of industry credentials in addition to college credit in many of these programs. Preparations are underway to launch a late start training program for Solar PV Installer as a component of the electrical wiring and construction trades program at Arizona Western College. Students will learn entry level electrical wiring skills, learn about the National Electrical Code, roofing systems for solar PV panel installation and wiring of solar system components for a grid tied system. This program of study will allow students to seek employment in the electrical trades with the added value of skills in the growing renewable energy industry. Students will develop hands on skills as they learn and work with solar PV mounting tools and equipment. Arizona Western College Division of Career Technical Education invites members of the community to schedule a meeting with the faculty and to view our training programs.
