New Del Sol Market to Move into Former Food City Site in San Luis

Up to 80 jobs are expected to be created here when a new Del Sol Market moves into premises formerly occupied by the Food City grocery store. Del Sol Market, the second to be located in San Luis, could open by the end of October in the Plaza Riedel shopping center, said Victor Salcido, president and general manager of the grocery chain’s parent company, Factor Sales. The announcement of the new store follows 15 months of negotiations between Salcido and shopping center developer Nieves Riedel for the purchase of the 52,000-square-foot site on the northeast corner of San Luis. “We are making changes to adapt the building to our concept,” Salcido said in a joint news conference with Riedel, owner of Riedel Construction in San Luis. “We want to serve this area of the city, and we hope people will support and continue to make us their choice” for shopping. Riedel said the store’s opening will serve as a stimulus for other businesses operating in the shopping center, and she praised Salcido as a risk taker at a time when a recession is discouraging others from pushing ahead with commercial investments. “Salcido is an example to follow,” Riedel said. “He is not afraid to take risks in his desire to create more jobs.” The new store will create between 75 and 80 jobs and will have departments now found in other Del Sol Markets in the area, such as a pharmacy and a sporting goods section, Salcido said. Salcido said he is confident the new store will thrive even tough economic times have caused a slowdown in growth and development on the east side of town. “Crises bring opportunities, of that I am confident.” The store chain has two Del Sol Markets in Yuma, one in Somerton, one in San Luis and one in neighboring San Luis Rio Colorado, Son. The former Food City site has been vacant since July 2009 when the owner, Bashas’, closed it as part of belt-tightening measures amid the recession. Riedel and Salcido declined to disclose the purchase price of the building.
